Digital Sculpting in VR with Oculus Medium

Anyone who knows me at all knows what a huge VR enthusiast I’ve become in the past few years.  I’ve finally been able to realize the dream of sculpting in VR and it’s mesmerizing.  This is the result of my first serious try to sculpt in VR and I have to say the effect is amazing.  It’s clear that the technology is not at a state to where Oculus Medium overtakes the big names in digital sculpting like ZBrush, but I’ve tried those other tools and never has sculpting on a computer felt this natural and easy to me.  Seeing my creation right in front of me like a real object and being able to turn it naturally with my hands makes the interface so much more intuitive than other programs.  Also the capability to interact with my hands in 3D space rather than  in 2D with a pen and tablet just feels so right.

My biggest gripe at this point is the paint tools. While sculpting feels great painting is lacking.  Perhaps this is just a result of not understanding the tools, but I suspect it’s more of a technology restriction at this point in the game.  It would be very nice to get some improvements to the paint transfer onto the model.  Right now it seems to be all or nothing, so it’s hard to work on a base and steadily build up color and the brush can’t be feathered to soften the edges.  Adding this and getting more resolution for the color and model would be great steps in the right direction for painting.

I can’t wait to work like this more and see how this software develops.  The future is here.
